The start of the school year often brings excitement and new beginnings. However, it can also lead to an increase in illnesses, including the common cold, COVID-19, flu, and Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD). While many are familiar with cold and flu symptoms, HFMD may be less well-known as it’s more commonly diagnosed in younger children. Here’s what you need to know to keep yourself and your community healthy!
The illness is usually not serious with mild symptoms up to 7 – 10 days, but it is very contagious.
To prevent spreading HFMD, wash your hands often especially after changing diapers, using the toilet, and coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose, clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, and avoid close contact with sick individuals. This includes avoiding shared spaces, sharing drinks, utensils, or other personal items.
COVID-19 continues to be a concern, and guidelines for staying home have evolved. Currently, those who test positive for COVID-19 should follow the same guidelines as they would for other common respiratory viruses, which includes staying home until they have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication AND symptoms have improved. Taking added precautions for an additional 5 days when around others is recommended to prevent further spread. Examples of added precautions are wearing masks and distancing from others.

When temperatures are high, drinking extra water throughout the day is a must. Grab your water bottle, add some liquid IV if you want and eat water-rich foods (🍉🥒🍓🫑🍅) to take care of your well-being throughout this summer.
